The seven thunders “uttered their voices.” (John assumes that the readers already have Some knowledge of these seven thunders.) In Sibylline Oracles 5.344–345, “It will be possible to hear a heavenly crash of thunder, the voice of God throughout broad heaven above.” The “voice of the thunder” and the light of the lightning” are kept in the heavens (1 Enoch 69.23). He speaks, and John hears 7 thunders reply, but a voice tells him not to write the words (Revelation 10:3,4). Zeus’s voice was literal thunder at times as you referenced in The Odyssey above. He is told to seal up the vision and not write it down. John gives greetings from âhim who is and who was and who is to come,â a phrase that usually means Jesus. There are 2 more sets scattered throughout the book as if they are waiting for a particularly observant reader to discover them.You may be familiar with the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3â11 at the beginning of Jesusâs Sermon on the MountââBlessed are the poor in spiritâ and so on.Well, âbeatitudeâ just means âblessing,â and indeed there are 7 blessings in Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.This first beatitude is the only one in the first 13 chapters of the book.
Reading these eleven verses will greatly aid in this study. In 2 Enoch 39.7 Enoch claims he has “heard the LORD speaking like loud thunder.” In the mystical visions of 3 Enoch, the writer “saw thunders and voices roaring in the midst of flames of fire” (3 Enoch 42.5)In an example of a heavenly tour, Enoch is shown the secrets of the thunders:John prepared to write the content of the words spoken by the thunders but a “voice from heaven” prevents him. John helpfully explains that just as the 7 lampstands represent the 7 churches, the 7 stars represent the 7 angels of the 7 churches (Revelation 1:20).After Jesus finishes dictating the letters to the 7 churches, John suddenly finds himself in the throne room of Heaven.
