Tennessee Department of Transportation geologist Larry Bolt first noticed the unusual geology in excavations during realignment widening of State Route 75. For thousands of years, this pond was surrounded by an ancient forest and served as home to many aquatic species like turtles and fish, while many other animals visited the pond to drink. When fresh, the clays have the property of turning from grayish brown, (5YR 3/2) to brownish black (5YR 2/1) within two minutes of exposure to air, eventually approaching very dark gray (N 2.5). You don’t have to be a paleontologist to find fossils, but identifying them is a different story. This left a vast fossil deposit that dates back approximately 5 million years ago. THE GRAY FOSSIL SITE. Excavations at this site have recovered fossils of around 200 species of animals and plants buried in an ancient sinkhole-pond. There are several thin cemented layers that show discrete brittle fracturing due to extension.
Few fish remains have been found. Many of these plants, including new species, have a striking resemblances to modern Asian plants.The fossil record of the Gray Site also includes microscopic remains of several fungal and algal species. The high limestone walls of the sinkhole have weathered away and the sinkhole is entirely filled-in with those mud layers that now make up the clay of the Gray Fossil Site.

The Gray Fossil Site is located in Washington County near the community of Gray, Tennessee. Many bones are fragmented and broken, while others remained articulated, but no evidence of predation, scavenging, or butchering has been seen in the bones so far examined.Findings have suggested abundant oak, hickory, and pine, and a high percentage of animals and plants that are exotic to the region, now found only in east and southeast Asia.The geological origin of this deposit remains problematic, although some process related to karst and cave formation appears most likely.
Some crocodilian remains have been encountered, as have tusk fragments, a partial jaw, humerus, and carpal bones of a rhinoceros, and frogs. Within the dark clays there are a number of large (up to car-sized) boulders or blocks of dolomite.
