I used Upstart to start the application at boot time, and it never failed me. I do understand the danger, but with very limited time & resources, I also do have to choose my battles.

Not sure if that helps, but I did not add meteor to my current PATH, so I run meteor using ../meteor/meteor as my app (the todos example) is located in /home/thomas/todos and meteor is in /home/thomas/meteor. When you save the file, the page in your browser will automatically update with the new content.
