While no technical gear was needed, a climb was necessary to reach the capstones. Below the bridge, Road Prong cascades in small chutes of whitewater and waterfalls, well worth a stop to admire. I would suggest not taking little ones on this hike. Good trail overall, highly recommend going beyond the closed gate at the end to climb up the chimney. Before the summit part of the trail was closed, the trail ended at the foot of the south capstone (the higher of the two), but various unmaintained spurs crossed over to the lower summit. Saw a few people returning from the “closed” area and hesitantly, (but not regrettably) followed their lead and took a peek. Bummer that final leg to Chimney Top is closed but view at the top where trail ends now is still solid. My family are all in good shape and the incline was tough. The Chimney Top hike is part of the northern section of the 24.7 mile North Fork Mountain Trail traverse hike with this area having the greatest density of overlooks. This trail was tied for first place with Alum to mount Le Conte! Definitely a climb on the way out. Chimney Top Rock is a popular attraction at Red River Gorge, so you may see other hikers on your journey. Getting to the top is worth the views. So glad we did! I wasn’t concerned about them slipping and falling down the mountainside like I have been on other trails. Don’t let people morally shame you into not going as the trail is more than solidified for the average thrill seeker. I feel the trail is very safe.
