Billy discredits the diary, implying that Harrison was the one who planted the evidence ("A Tap Dance").
"; the comedy-lyric-laden " Roxie's trial begins, and Billy turns it into a media spectacle ("Razzle Dazzle") with the help of the sensationalist newspaper reporters and radio personality Mary Sunshine. Roxie initially refuses, but later accepts when Velma points out that they can perform together despite their resentment for each other. Some young ladies from the Eastchester Finishing School (implicitly in New York or Pennsylvania, which have Westchesters) are also Inn guests.
The original production's musical numbers were staged as The cast received widespread acclaim for their performances. As Amos confesses to the detective, Roxie fantasizes that she is singing a song devoted to her husband ("Funny Honey").
The chief gives Mary the Inn's land and dedicates the rest for a national park, a place the Rangers can call home. But his interest shifts to Mme. Captain Jim and his Forest Rangers arrive. They are searching for the disruptive Indian Yellow Feather. Roxie is acquitted, but her fame is eclipsed moments later when another woman, who had also shot her own husband, shoots her lawyer just outside the courthouse.
A month later, Casely admits to Roxie that he has no showbiz connections and just wanted to sleep with her. Jim and Mary return to the spotlight. The Rangers, who have surrounded the Inn, capture Yellow Feather as he tries to escape.
The trial seems to be going Roxie's way until Velma appears with Roxie's diary: she reads incriminating entries in exchange for amnesty in her own case. On Mary's advice Brown Bear is engaged in peaceful legal proceedings rather than warfare to establish his rights.

Later, the young ranger Billy and his girlfriend Nancy squabble about Nancy's appetite for other men. Ambitious District Attorney Harrison announces he will seek the death penalty. The two stage a spectacular performance that earns them the love of the audience and the press ("Nowadays / Hot Honey Rag").
Jim returns just in time and wrests a knife from the villain. Yellow Feather sneaks in, finds her there, ties her to a tree, and threatens to debase her.
