Miniver' possesses a surprisingly active soundscape (it received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Recording), and the DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 mono track included here honors it to the fullest.

In particular, Greer Garson's Oscar-winning performance in the title role often comes off as artificial, especially when she nobly tends her rose garden while her stalwart husband (Walter Pidgeon) participates in the evacuation at Dunkirk. With her peaceful English life suddenly thrown into turmoil by the Second World War, MRS. MINIVER continues to provide a solid rock of security for her family. 80 out of 90 found this helpful. "Mrs. Miniver" is an important film which captured the Best Picture Oscar in 1942. A distant barrage can be heard, but it doesn't ruffle their nerves or impinge on their casual conversation. The bombing sequences produce a good degree of heft, even without subwoofer involvement, and while a bit of distortion creeps into the scene showing the small crafts gathering en masse on the Thames River, the low-end presence is strikingly pronounced. The movie deals with what civilians have to go through while all the men are off fighting in the war. Today it is not possible for it to retain the power it held during the period, but one of the reasons it is still a good movie because it is great wholesome family entertainment. Though violence comes at a premium, the standing of 'Mrs. William Wyler's understated, sensitive, and utterly involving portrait of a British family and their day-to-day struggles during the German Blitz brings the homefront to the forefront, and with keen perception chronicles the personal battles fought there. The sentimental yet gripping story of "an average middle-class English family" (as the opening titles describe them) in the midst of total war, won six Academy Awards and was the box-office hit of 1942 on both sides of the Atlantic. |
