Murphy Ranch Road Trail provides alternative connectivity and loop options with Rustic Canyon, Beehive, Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, Sullivan Ridge, Josepho Barn Road, Pipe Corral, and Josepho Spur Trails within Topanga State Park. 524 steps. Overall it was a nice hike that felt like a bit of a workout but not too strenuous. Assuming it was somewhat of a leveled trail, It got really steep along the way.

The Murphy Ranch is a ranch built in Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles in the 1930s by Winona and Norman Stephens, who were sympathizers of the anti-semitic, white supremacist Silver Legion of America. This trail like all others in Whittier is beautiful but for me not easy. (And thank goodness they were the friendly bunch! Either way, they both lead to beautiful views once you reach the top overlooking spectacular views of the city! It can be very easy to get lost, so I recommend picking out markers to help you find your way back! Great for family outings!
Im very thankful for them. A few mountain bikers so be alert around bends. You are entering nature with wildlife so be cautious at all times. You’ll come to another fence with an opening and you’ll see stairs to the right.

I really enjoyed this hike and would probably do it again with my friends.the murphy ranch east stairs are a great workout. At the bottom of the stairs continue left to walk around the compound. This hike begins at the residential end of Sullivan Ridge Fire Road, but the ruins may also be reached by hiking up Rustic Canyon from Will Rogers State Historic Park. Aside from the stairs to nowhere, the hiking down in the canyon is easy and enjoyable! Easy hike with some slight incline. Plenty of free parking. One furthers leads you to nothing.

Some of the spots are narrow and lots of curves, a lot of the bicyclists were flying down not saying anything till they were on top of you and then expecting you to scale the side of the mountain so they can fly down. (It’s much more fun than continuing down a linear road in my opinion. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. There are many smaller trials in the loop, that can be fun or confusing. Lots of people w their dogs Easy and short trail, started when it was getting dark and was a pretty scary even though in a nice neighborhood. !Thankfully, it wasn’t too dark since some of the city lights from above offered a speckle of light to guide me.I made my way up the rest of the staircase, exhausted and ready to get back to my damn car already.Reaching the top of the staircase was the equivalent of watching a protagonist of a movie making it out alive of some horror infested freak show.And I’d like to think I’m the hero of my life every now and then.I forked right and made my way through the initial paved road towards the beginning of the Murphy Ranch Trail, the city glistening beyond the Santa Monica Mountain range as I felt happy to see civilization for once in my life.After about 45 minutes, I finally reach my car, with feelings of exasperation and joy that I didn’t have to spend the night in the woods.My mind races, replaying everything that just happenedFrom the time I found my way back to the staircase to the time my phone battery died was a difference of 2%.In other words, 2 more minutes in the woods and I would have been a goner.I think for a moment on what to do for the rest of the night, debating on whether or not I should go home, or find another adventure to embark on for the evening.A few minutes pass before I decide to turn the ignition on and proceed to drive for Lyft for 2.5 hoursAfter all, I’m already in a hot spot of the Santa Monica area.But don’t let my borderline traumatizing experience steer you away from exploring the depths of the wilderness within the artfully painted compound, for this hike is certainly worth getting lost in, if you dare…Hey there!
It's the perfect challenge for me. Easy for beginners, but has some decent climbs. This trail leads to an open area with yet another paved road that forked off.”I was within that fork, trying to find that “short trail” within the woods.The problem was that there were many “pseudo” trails that seemed to be the correct path to follow but ultimately lead to a dead end.Furthermore, the flashlight could only illuminate about 2 feet in front of me, and with the battery draining at an unexaggerated rate of 1%/minute, I began running through the woods to try and find the staircase.After a few minutes of panic, the battery was now at about 21%.Without a light source, signage, or any human contact nearby, I would be forced to spend the night alone in the woods if I didn’t find my way back.What’s funny is that this entire scenario felt like a re-creation of one of my favorite horror films, The Blair Witch Project.I was aimlessly running around the woods only to find myself back at the exact same spot I was trying to get out of.My heart begins to race.
