But Peter Ackroyd could not decide whether he was writing an essay on mysticism, a guide to 18th century London churches or a murder mystery and consequently fell between the three stools, failing to deliver on any level. Except for some vivid descriptions of homelessness and moody noctunal scenes,mthis book rings a lot more vivid in the passages written in old English that correspond to the parts of the story with Mr. Dyer as the protagonist. No real climax, no resolution, I'm not even sure what the hell happened, to be honest. Hawksmoor is a mystery novel written by the English author Peter Ackroyd.

At first, I was glad to leave it behind as it was an intense reading experience, however, I am considering that I may revisit it some day.Reality gets bent in this masterpiece of dark magic, history, and the conflict between superstition and science--with math and engineering at the crux, one foot in both worlds.I may have been in the wrong mood to read this but this is the internet and I can do whatever I want. It won major awards, then seems to have been largely forgotten.
Ackroyd is very good at exposing the blacker sides of authority figures, of movers and shakers; in Hawksmoor, Sir Christopher Wren seems at times almost worse than Nicholas Dyer in his lust for the seamy and unspeakable underbelly beneath London which is portrayed in the book.

What a joy to read, but at the same, what a terrible ordeal. Like the Clerkenwell Tales, this book is historical fiction so there's no excuse for an exciting finale really. The real 18th century architect Nicholas Hawksmoor becomes the fictitious Nicholas Dyer, heavily involved with the occult. When I reached part two, I decided to stop and begin reading the book over again: I found I was understanding the language a bit better but I also realized there were coincidences across time to which I should be paying closer attention. This may be classified as mystery, postmodern, and horror and, indeed, it is all of these things. In reality, or whatever world Ackroyd is writing about, it comes across as a split-personality disorder across the centuries.
