I still love utopias, and this book is very much a utopia: an idealistic nowhere, but a nowhere that's worth talking about.
It's good to get a dose of utopia set in SF, and the writing is compelling.
It’s not a simple matter of cause and effect, reward and punishment. I just don't think that we can cure people by re-imagining their chi or that crystals will ever power the internet. Bad is a group of power hungary with guns and monopoly on drugs, especially drugs everyone has to take to stay alive. Extremely close to the end of the book so I will reserve judgement on the ending, but I am extremely impressed with Starhawk's ability to draw me into her world and keep me there. The Fifth Sacred Thing is a 1993 post-apocalyptic novel written by Starhawk. I struggle with the ideas of non-violent protest and productive non-cooperation, they are concepts that are difficult to me to grasp. This book is deeply affecting and touched on so many of my passions, it is difficult to know where to start. A local friend suggested I read "The Fifth Sacred Thing," so that some of us could form a book discussion group about the ideas and vision of this novel.
There is a very serious polemical intent behind this book: it is quite prophetic in its warning - published in the early 1990s it shows a California beset by drought as well as pollution and disease and uses the term 'climate change' in at least one place. there were parts of the book that were kind of too scary for me, i felt it too much, took it on in my body, which is not good for me. I thought it was absolutely beautiful, and am so thankful to my friend who gave it to me.The Fifth Scared Thing might have made a pretty engaging short story or novella if it focused on and committed to examining its major themes (sustainability, non-violent resistance, etc). The concept had intrigued me and it was recommended by a friend, but the presentation was a bit off putting. I want to learn how to mend energy or release it when it's blocked. One of the best depictions of non-violent protest and rebuilding of society on Her (Goddess) principals. There are times when I need this book the way I need air. A powerful tale of a community without poverty, hunger, or hatred, rich in diversity of culture, race, religion and sexual orientation, honouring the Four Sacred Things that sustain life – Earth, Air, Fire and Water – above all. 0553373803 My book club read this and it sparked one of our most invigorating conversations several months ago. Apocalyptic yet prophetic book of a very possible world. It's messages are nuanced about good and evil and about nonviolent struggle vs. the use of violent resistance. I really loved it.Reading this book made me want to learn magic and to learn to heal. It's classic good against evil; good being a group people who've banded together in love and equity, and using various wiccan and pagan powers, have carved out a life that is gentle on the earth. As with so many authors, I wish I could present the Baha'i Faith to Starhawk and talk with her about how our views mesh and differ. I can now say that this series is absolutely by far the very best thing I have ever read.
If it could have set up those issues without depending on New Age-y "science" (e.g., manipulating ch'i, using intelligent crystals for computers that are programmed through advanced visualization techniques, acupuncture, using the brain's natural electronic field to manipulate electronic devices) and magic (e.g., communicating with the dead, communicating with bees, vision quests), it might have been good, because the insights regarding nonviolence can be quite valuable. i finished it a couple months ago and i keep meaning to write my review of it.
