The Lotus

I know the lotus grows from mud.
I know the murky soil;

The rotting, fetid places
Of pain, loss, and turmoil.

I know the lotus blooms in spite
Of growing in this place,

But did you know
That you could grow
A lotus in a vase?

The tender flower must be strong
To defy its muddy cradle,

And still I feel my heart cry out:
I wish the soil were able.
